Scientific report

The main purpose of any scientific report is to communicate research findings. It is the formal writing up of an experiment or an investigation into a particular topic.

Scientific reports include :
  • Laboratory reports, i.e. writing up an experiment
  • Research reports, i.e. investigating a topic
  • Field trip write-ups

While these types of reports are different in terms of their size and scope, they share some of the following features:
  • They convey key information quickly and accurately.
  • They describe a process which can be reproduced by others. 
  • They are written in a concise style, giving precise detail.
  • They are illustrated with tables, graphs, photographs or drawings.
