Avoiding Plagiarism

It is important to understand what is and isn't plagiarism to avoid unintentionally plagiarising when writing an assignment.

If you follow these few rules, you will avoid plagiarising:
  • Keep accurate records of all the information sources used when doing research.
  • Always acknowledge a quotation, even if it is brief.
  • Become proficient with the referencing style used at the College.
  • Seek help from a librarian or your lecturer when unsure.
Plagiarism can be detected in a number of ways:
  • Your lecturer is able to detect variations in style, tone and format.
  • Computers can be used to detect plagiarism.
  • Plagiarism detection software is available.
