Copyright is an internationally recognised protection of the creator’s (writer, author, composer, etc.) rights to the ownership of his or her original work. 

It is important you comply with copyright. Breaching copyright affects the income of the creator and might affect their ability to keep producing quality work.
Sometimes copyright restrictions are clearly stated. When they are not clearly stated follow the guideline:  

Copying of approximately 10% of a publication, or one entire chapter of a book, or one article from a journal, is acceptable for educational purposes (including private study).
The Copyright Act 1994 legally protects creator’s copyright in New Zealand.
